1852 STUDIBAKER FARM & PRARIE WAGONBeing an old 'car-guy', I did not realize that the Studibaker that I've known for cars, especially the 'space age' bullett nose car of the fifties actually began business in the 1800's making wagons! This one caught my eye as its similar to what I remember in my Grandfathers farmyard MANY years ago. As a kid I marveled at how huge it was, and those wheels---not even close to the lower home-made wagons my dad had. Dad told me that when he was young in the early 1900's, the gravel roads were maintained by the local farmers, so they'd use wagons like this to haul gravel. They made the bed so that you could lift out a couple boards & spread the gravel while the horses kinda guided themselves. I'm told that this little wagon was made by a guy who actually worked in the Studibaker factory in South Bend, Indiana. I guess his roads were not gravel, so the bottom of the bed is solid! He did build a LOT of detail into this wagon, so just maybe he had access to some original drawings or photos. Sorry though, I do not have any documentation of the origin of this toy.
Well, its an interesting story, but time has come to pass this little treasure on. So, please check the photos for full description and let me know if you need another. The bed measures about 15 in. long x 5 in. wide. Across the wheels its about 16 inches. 7 1/2 high to top of bedsides. Wheels are 6 in. rear and 5 1/4 in. dia front. I'll ship with at least the tongue removed & place the two little pins in a baggie.
