Description

Length -1169 mm
Width - 129 mm
Height - 35.8 mm
Types of Woods  - Honoki (Magnolia obovata, ホオノキ、朴の木)
Origin.  - Hokkaido
3 shallow knots.
NOTE:
The both end grains are coated by bond for preventing cracking. This lumber has been dried well.
If you are willing to use this for making a shirasaya, please measure your sword and check if the size of this lumber is enough to make it.
I recommend to split it after you get even if you don't use it anytime soon.
This is HONOKI lumber, not HINOKI.
Honoki is popular for making a wood sheath for a Japanese kitchen knife, or its handle. It is also used for making a shirasaya (Japanese sword sheath and its handle).
Honoki is also popular for woodblock printing in Japan.
Honoki has somewhat greenish color when it is fresh, (It will turn to ｋhaki or light brown by aging). It has a faint fragrance, which is not special. Honoki is categorized to soft woods. It has water resistance like Hinoki.
It is used for a shirasaya because it has lower resin than sugi or hinoki, which causes rust to steel of a sword.
It is said that Hinoki and Sugi were also used for a shirasaya in ancient times, but they were replaced to Honoki in sometime in the middle ages.
Honoki itself is not a rare tree in Japan, but it is hard to find thick lumber.
